Bio

Maggie Adams (they/she) is an emerging interdisciplinary artist based in eastern Iowa. They received their BFA in Ceramics and Fiber art from Truman State University in 2021, with a minor in art history. Adams was initially drawn to ceramics and fiber art because of the roots each discipline holds in functionality.

Currently, Adams is a first year ceramics MFA candidate at the University of Iowa. Prior to moving up north, they managed the clay studios at Access Arts, a non-profit community art center in Columbia, MO. Adams has been a resident artist at the Osage Arts Community in Belle, MO where they have been pursuing their body of work titled (Dis)Comfort. She has also exhibited her artwork nationally in juried and invitational shows.

Their current studio practice explores queer identity and the convoluted relationship they have with their female body. Through the combination of life casting and contemporary craft techniques, Adams' work gives form to the visceral feeling of  being tethered to a body that fluctuates between a comfortable home and a fleshy cage. Many of their pieces challenge western society's hypersexualization of the female body and their deep discomfort with being subjected to it. She often achieves this through creating interactive sculptures or installations, and has recently taken interest in exploring the potential of performance art as well.
